Overview

cdn stands for Content Delivery Network. In Chinese, it is translated as "content distribution network." CDN is a distributed server architecture built on top of the existing network. Its core function is to distribute origin content to users from the nearest location through edge nodes deployed worldwide, thereby optimizing content delivery efficiency, reducing access latency, and improving service stability. CDN is essentially an "intelligent distribution network" for Internet content, allowing users to obtain the content they need from the nearest "site" and avoiding speed bottlenecks caused by cross-regional transmission.

I. Core Working Principle of CDN

CDN's operating logic revolves around "nearby access" and "intelligent scheduling." The entire process is clear and efficient:

Content caching: CDN deploys edge nodes (also called POP nodes) in multiple core regions around the world, and copies and caches the origin's static resources (images, CSS/JS files, videos) and dynamic content (API responses, real-time streams) to these nodes in advance.

Intelligent resolution: When a user initiates an access request, CDN's DNS server uses load balancing algorithms to resolve the IP of the optimal edge node based on information such as the user's IP address, network operator, and node load status.

Nearby response: The user's request is directly directed to the nearest edge node. If the node has already cached the target content, it returns it directly to the user. If not cached (i.e., a "cache miss"), the node initiates a "back-to-origin" request to the origin, obtains the content, caches it, and responds to the user. Subsequent users in the same region can directly reuse the cache.

Dynamic optimization: Through technologies such as protocol optimization (e.g., HTTP/2, QUIC) and data compression (Brotli/Gzip), transmission efficiency is further improved, ensuring a smooth experience even in weak network environments.

II. Key Core Technologies of CDN

CDN's efficient operation relies on the coordinated support of multiple core technologies. These technologies are also the core source of its advantages:

Cache management technology: Uses algorithms such as TTL (Time to Live) and LRU (Least Recently Used) to intelligently manage the update and eviction of cached content, balancing freshness and cache efficiency.

Load balancing technology: Combines DNS load balancing, Anycast routing, and other methods to evenly distribute massive user requests across different edge nodes, avoiding overload on a single node.

Security protection technology: Built-in DDoS attack protection, Web Application Firewall (WAF), HTTPS encrypted transmission, and other functions分散 malicious attack traffic and ensure data transmission security.

Dynamic acceleration technology: For non-static content such as API interfaces and e-commerce dynamic pages, it reduces the response latency of dynamic requests through edge computing, TCP link optimization, and other means.

III. Core Advantages of CDN

Improved access speed: By distributing content nearby, it reduces network transmission distance and hops, and can reduce access latency by more than 50%. Web page loading, video playback, and file download speeds are significantly improved.

Reduced origin load: Most user requests are handled by edge nodes. The origin only needs to handle a small number of "back-to-origin" requests and core business logic. Server load can be reduced by 70%–90%, avoiding crashes during peak periods.

Saved bandwidth costs: The caching mechanism of edge nodes reduces repeated data transmission between the origin and nodes, greatly reducing enterprises' bandwidth consumption and operating costs.

Enhanced service availability: The distributed architecture supports automatic failover. If a node fails, requests are automatically switched to other normal nodes, and service availability can reach over 99.9%.

Optimized global access: For cross-border or cross-operator access, it solves network interconnection issues, eliminates access lag caused by "north-south network differences," and helps global business expansion.
