Overview
"IPv4" is simply one format of IP addresses — the kind you often see as "123.123.123.123," made up of four groups of numbers. It accurately locates the target server's position. A DNS server, on the other hand, can be thought of as a giant "network address phonebook," dedicated to translating easy-to-remember domain names into IPv4 addresses that computers can understand.Here's a concrete example: when you want to visit a shopping site and type in its domain name, your device doesn't directly recognize that text combination. Instead, it sends a "query request" to the IPv4 DNS server. After receiving the request, the server looks up the domain in its "phonebook" to find the corresponding IPv4 address and returns it to your device. Only after your device gets that address can it establish a connection to the site's server and load the webpage. Without this "translator," we'd have to memorize hundreds of numeric IPv4 addresses just to browse the internet — which would be a nightmare.
IPv4 DNS servers also have different "roles" — it's not just a single machine doing all the work. The default DNS server most people use is usually provided by their ISP. It's geographically close, so it's fast for accessing regular sites. But sometimes you might experience slow loading or certain sites not opening, which could be due to ISP DNS server congestion or resolution issues. In such cases, you can switch to a public DNS server — for example, free ones from well-known companies. Many people have reported noticeably faster loading times after switching.
There are also specialized IPv4 DNS servers for specific scenarios. For instance, corporate office networks often set up their own DNS servers to handle internal domain resolution. This not only speeds up internal access but also improves data security. Some parents also use DNS servers with filtering features to block inappropriate websites, preventing children from accidentally accessing them.
Here are two practical tips: first, if you encounter page loading issues, try switching DNS server addresses — it often fixes the problem. Second, be careful not to mix up IPv4 and IPv6 DNS addresses when switching, or you might lose internet connectivity altogether.
