1. Definition of Root ServerA root server, also known as a root name server, is the top-level server in the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is a distributed database that translates domain names (such as www.example.com) into corresponding IP addresses (such as 192.0.2.1). When we try to visit a website, our computer first sends a request to a DNS server to obtain the IP address associated with that domain. Root servers are the first level in the DNS resolution process — they store DNS records for top-level domains (such as .com, .net, .org, etc.).
2. Distribution of Root Servers
Currently, there are only 13 root servers worldwide. The United States hosts 1 master root server and 9 of the remaining 12 secondary root servers. The United Kingdom, Sweden, and Japan each host 1 secondary root server. These root servers are managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
3. Functions and Importance of Root Servers
The main functions of root servers are to store and manage DNS records for global top-level domains and to direct DNS queries to the appropriate top-level domain servers. They are critical to the normal operation of the Internet because if a root server fails or is attacked, domain name resolution services worldwide could be affected.
4. Management and Security of Root Servers
Given the critical nature and sensitivity of root servers, their management and security are taken very seriously. ICANN is responsible for monitoring and maintaining root server operations and regularly updates software and hardware to ensure security. In addition, governments and international organizations have strengthened protections for root servers to prevent cyberattacks or malicious tampering.
